Kluwe Has a Home in The Bay Area

About week after being cut by the Vikings, Chris Kluwe has signed a deal to punt for the Raiders. Kluwe has averaged more than 44 yards a kick over his 8 year career, and has had only one punt blocked. So why was he cut from Minnesota? The Governor wonders the same thing.

On a radio show, the day Kluwe was cut, Mark Dayton said, “it seems to me the general manager said, right after the draft, they were going to have competition. Well, they bring the one guy in, he kicks for a weekend and that's competition?" In addition to being a punter Kluwe was an advocate for gay marriage. Gay marriage advocates, including the governor, have suggested politics and not punting was the reason for Kluwe being cut.
Kluwe’s got a job, but it’s just a one year contract, so he has little job security. The Kluwe-Raider marriage looks like it’s made in heaven. Kluwe says he plans to continue speaking out in favor of gay marriage and he’ll have plenty of opportunity and support in Oakland. He’s from California, and he’ll

be living in working in the Bay Area, the epicenter of the gay rights movement. In addition to his terrific punting skills, there is a sentimental reason the Raiders may have wanted Kluwe; he has spoken passionately in favor of Ray Guy’s candidacy for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Guy is the greatest punter ever in the history of the NFL.
