Woods Wins Again, Garcia Chokes, Again

Tiger Woods won the The Players Championship in Florida today, beating a crowed field that included Sergio Garcia until he choked on the 17th hole.
Tiger Woods
Woods finished with a 13-under 275 and won this event for the first time since 2001. The victory was Woods' 78th of his career. That's four short of the record held by Sam Sneed.  Woods is now 52-4 when holding at least a share of the lead entering the final round. Woods also became the sixth player to win multiple Players titles in the tournament's 40 years.

Sergio Garcia
That's what a great golfer does. Garcia is not a great golfer, and on Sunday it showed. All tied with Woods at the 17th tee, Garcia hit two consecutive tee shots into the water. He was out of the tournament. Garcia carded a six over par in his last two holes. Worse yet is Garcia's whining. On Saturday he complained because he thought Woods was responsible for crowd noise as Garcia was about it hit from the fairway. When Woods heard the complaint, he said it wasn't surprising to hear whining from Garcia.

It wasn't the first time Garcia choked this year. He led the Master's after shooting a 66 in the opening round, then shot a 76 the next day. While Tiger was busy winning his 78th PGA tournament, Sergio has just 8. His rivirly with Woods is part media invention and part Garcia's doing. The argument over the weekend is just an extension of what happened in 1999. Playing in the U.S. Open GarcĂa hit his most famous shot: with
his ball up against a tree trunk in the right rough on the 16th hole, and the green hidden from view, he swung hard with his eyes shut and hit a low curving fade that ran up onto the green. During the same round, Garcia is alleged, by the media, to have shouted something braggadociously in Woods direction. The difference is Garcia never lived up to his early promise Woods did and is still doing it. Woods is a living legend. Garcia is somewhat embarrassing.
